Your simple guide to conformance and what is required from a device that modulates your surplus power.
In simple terms;- Any device that is attached to the home mains grid, ie, Television, Games Console, Washing Machine, Fridge MUST comply with EU Directive 2004/108/EC
Under this umbrella there are many other standards, one of which is EN 61000-3-2 Harmonic Levels, limits for harmonic current emissions. Another important standard is EN 60335-3-3:2008 for Safety.
What damage can harmonic emissions cause?
What certification standards should you expect your device to achieve?
EN 55014-1:2006+A2 - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Requirements for household appliances
EN 61000-3-2 - Limits for harmonic current emissions.
EN 61000-3-3 - Limitation of voltage changes, voltage fluctuations and flicker.
EN 60335-1:2012 - Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 1: General requirements
Sadly many devices on the market do not achieve these standards and use a low-cost technology (Phase Angle), these devices will never reach the permitted levels for harmonic testing.
Will your inverter manufacturer invalidate your warranty if you add such a device to your system? This is a question you must ask your manufacturer.
Do not be discouraged from requesting the test reports from the manufacturer, if they have them, they should not have a problem sharing them with you.
